There’s an old Buddhist mantra: See no evil Hear no evil, Speak no evil. Following it, however, is tough when the BBC insists on airing a Mrs. Brown’s Boys Christmas Special every year. Enter Speak No Evil, a reimagining of a Danish psychological thriller. Director James Watkins collaborates with the original screenwriters to bring this unsettling story to life. We first encounter Ben and Louise vacationing in Italy with their daughter Agnes. Their holiday takes an awkward turn when a Danish father corners them with endless talk of cooking with mushrooms. Fortunately, they find a lifeline in Paddy (James McAvoy), an outgoing man with his wife Clara and their mute son Ant (Dan Hough). Though initially hesitant, Ben and Louise quickly warm to Paddy especially when he expertly steers the Danish family away from them. As with many vacation friendships, the usual promise that we must stay in touch is made and quickly forgotten until Paddy follows through.
