Harold and the Purple Crayon stands as the most lackluster and heartless family movie churned out by Hollywood since Clifford the Big Red Dog. It’s an affront to the young audience it’s targeting, their parents, and even the screens it’s shown on. I have a child who perfectly fits the intended demographic for this movie. He wasn’t with me when I watched it. Had he been I would have had to apologize profusely afterward. Instead of presenting a straightforward tale inspired by Crockett Johnson’s cherished children’s book the film morphs into a grandiose special effects-heavy escapade. Zachary Levi portrays the grown-up Harold, who sketches a door to the real world in his quest to find his creator.
