Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 2024

Kevin Costner’s latest artistic venture since his rise to fame with the TV sensation Yellowstone is Horizon: An American Saga. This ambitious project with its first chapter debuting out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It sees Costner returning to the American frontier a setting that defined his acclaimed 1990 Oscar Best Picture winner Dances With Wolves. Marking his first feature directorial effort in over two decades Horizon unfolds in 1859 weaving a vast Western tapestry filled with diverse characters. Through grand in scale and aspiration Horizon doesn’t present a clear dominant narrative. Not even the one centered on Costner’s character horse trader Hayes Ellison. The numerous storylines while rich in detail don’t converge into a singular overarching theme. Some characters arcs stand out yet others seem almost interchangeable contributing to a complex but fragmented narrative experience.
