The story opens in 2012 with Omaha-based single auto technician Dave Kroupa, who is eager to socialise following a recent split. On a dating app, he meets Liz Golyar, a lady who likes to bowl and exhibits a rebellious side in a video where she switches off security cameras. Concurrently, believing their partnership to be informal, Dave also gets close to Cari Farver. Farver, though, exhibits strange behaviour. She sends Dave a steady stream of menacing emails and SMS. As the virtual abuse intensifies, the screen fills with profanity and the soundtrack is marred by digital faults. When Golyar’s home inexplicably catches fire, things take a dark turn.
