Shirley 2024 is a biographical film on the groundbreaking politician and prior presidential candidate Shirley Chisholm. Just 11 women were among the 435 members of the 1968 House of Representatives, according to a pictorial representation of the body. There are no black ladies among the eleven. Or, to put it more bluntly, in the official congressional class photo on the steps of the Capitol, Chisholm, Regina King, is the only Black woman’s face in a sea of aged white men’s features. Chisholm’s campaign was an uphill battle, and her very presence in the halls of power was radical, so even with the image’s obvious computer-generated imagery effects on the Capitol dome, it works nicely.
