White Bird is the newest adaptation of R.J. Palacio’s work, drawn from the 2024 graphic novels. Much like the success of Wonder, White Bird is a story grounded in the choice to show kindness even in the darkest of circumstances. Set during the Nazi occupation in France, the film focuses on the harrowing journey of a Jewish teenager forced to hide caught amid a hostile and terrifying world that was once her home. This isn’t a light viewing experience it’s tense and laden with stress at almost every turn. However, the film’s pacing drags at times, especially in scenes meant to showcase the transportive power of imagination. Despite the intriguing concept of escaping through daydreams, the execution falls flat. These moments intended to evoke awe end up feeling uninspired and fail to capture the magic they aim for.
