One could easily lose their bearings in Megalopolis. It appears Francis Ford Coppola might have done just that though it feels off as it suggests an unintentional wandering of the mind. In truth, Coppola has willingly surrendered his mental landscape to this sprawling eccentric, and delightfully absurd film. Like a vacuum sucking up the remnants of a 40-year-long career, the movie collects fragments of experience. A few lifeless moths, some biscuit crumbs, dusted over with lint. Megalopolis stands as New Rome, a fictional New York but it’s the Georgia soundstage splashed with synthetic apricot skies. At times, it’s an eyesore garishly unpleasant but occasionally drifts into a dreamlike beauty like when a body sinks merging with the stones of a riverbed.
